Oiz Megalithic Route: Mallabia reveals its prehistoric treasure

The Mallabia City Council has presented the new “Oiz Megalithic Route,” a fascinating 6.5-kilometer itinerary that invites you to discover the municipality’s valuable archaeological heritage.

This route directly connects the town with the impressive megalithic site of Mount Oiz, a complex of dolmens, burial mounds, and cromlechs built between the 4th and 1st millennia BC, a prehistoric legacy still undiscovered by many.

A journey through time for all ages

The Oiz Megalithic Route, which connects the points of Undakorta and Iturrizuri, is fully signposted and accessible to hikers of all levels. With a 250-meter drop and an estimated duration of two hours, it offers an immersion in one of the most important megalithic sites in Bizkaia, extending along the southern slope of the Oiz mountain range, between Mallabia and Berriz.

Research and appreciation of an ancestral legacy

This new historical, natural, and educational resource is the result of an exhaustive project led by the AGIRI Arkeologia Elkartea association between 2021 and 2024. Thanks to scientific research, excavations, and documentation work, our understanding of this unique site has been deepened. The route now allows us to understand how prehistoric societies related to their environment and worshipped their dead.

A cultural alternative to enjoy

The inauguration of the Oiz Megalithic Route offers an attractive cultural alternative to enjoy, combining contact with nature with the discovery of an ancestral heritage. A unique opportunity to learn about the history of the territory while enjoying a pleasant walk.
