Travel to our historical past and visit one of its most emblematic buildings. TheMuñatones Castle, in Muskiz , opens its doors every Sunday in the summer (until September 15) and offers guided tours of this construction, declared a Monumental Complex, of great historical value.

There will be two passes: the first, at 10:30 a.m. (this pass can be completed with a visit to the El Pobal Ironworks, at 12:00 p.m.), and the second, at 12:30 p.m. strong> The visit includes climbing the walkway, from where there is a privileged view towards the outside, which will allow you to understand the strategic location of the building.

Those who visit the castle on July 21, 2024, will have the opportunity to enjoy a theatrical visit “The intrigues of Muñatones”, where the tour is carried out alongside characters key to the past of this medieval tower.

Joint visit: Castle and Ironworks of El Pobal

On Saturdays, July 17 and 27, the Castle will open exceptionally, and will allow a visit to the fortress and a tour with a demonstration of theEl Pobal Ironworks. La Ferrería de El Pobal also usually organizes very fun and educational workshops for txikis. You can check the upcoming workshops and activities on our agenda.

The joint visit to the two monuments, castle and forge, illustrates different but complementary aspects of Bizkaia’s past. They are scenarios, both with great evocative power, through which we will learn about the ways of life of the rural nobility and the sources of wealth on which they based their power.

Monumental complex of great historical value

The Muñatones Castle is the result of a long construction process, which lasted during the 14th and 15th centuries, in the context of the factional wars that devastated the Basque Country at that time. It is one of the most outstanding elements of Biscay’s architectural heritage, which is why it was declared a Monumental Ensemble, recognizing its exceptional historical value and the quality of the preserved remains.

It is also linked to one of the most unique characters in our history, the powerful Lope García de Salazar, a man of arms and letters, to whom we owe the writing of the well-known Bienandanzas e Fortunas.
The El Pobal Ironworks has a close relationship with the flag fortress. Ochoa de Salazar, grandson of the chronicler Lope García, built the forge at the beginning of the 16th century and his descendants maintained ownership of this ironworks business for nearly 200 years.
